“The Product for Today with No Compromise for The Future”
Not surprisingly, we love sustainability. We believe in supplying high quality, ethically sourced, gorgeous furniture that’s going to go the distance. To us, being sustainable isn’t just about using reclaimed timber, but protecting and supporting every aspect of the supply chain. We are proud to say that at each stage of supply, manufacturing, and selling, we streamline every possible process so that the goods you receive are sustainable.
Supporting sustainability helps to reduce our impact on the environment and our world. Unmanaged de-forestation has already caused devastating effects on the earth along with the communities in the areas affected.
We support many organisations to try and reduce this impact, by collaborating expertise we can minimise the negative effects of global furniture manufacturing. Trees for Trees is a non-profit organisation we endorse that empowers communities to take part in re-forestation initiatives and also works to educate society about the impact of logging in Indonesia, where a large amount of our teak furniture is sourced. Perum Perhutani is among the bodies we support that act against illegal logging of trees in Indonesia and are certified by the Rainforest Alliance for Sustainable Forest Management. They actively prevent illegal logging and certify the timber used is from sustainable sources, totalling an area in excess of 2.4 million hectors.
Since the start of 2026, we have partnered with Ecologi to fund the planting of a tree for every fulfilled order that we receive. This way, together with our customers, we are making a direct and measurable positive impact on the environment in addition to the considerations already made with our products. To celebrate and commemorate our company rebranding in 2026, we funded 1,000 tree plantings in a single batch – we are proud to work with Ecologi and support the fantastic work they are doing.
To help guide our customers on the sustainability of our products, we have developed a Sustainability Score Matrix. Keep an eye out for scores on each product ranging from A+ to C. You may notice that products scoring “D” are not found on our store – and that is because we at Sustainable Furniture are committed to not sell any products that have a high negative impact on the environment. Whilst many of our products have a positive sustainability profile (A+ to B), there are instances where in order to achieve a balance of functionality and longevity, conventional materials may also be used – albeit selectively. In instances where conventional materials are required, we work actively with our suppliers to develop a more sustainable alternative (C). This includes raw material sourcing right through to product design & development, procurement, production, quality control and in-situ product testing. This process takes a long time as we are as strongly committed to reliable quality as we are sustainability. The definitions of our scoring matrix are as follows:
Sustainability Score Matrix
A+ – Natural Sustainability: Reclaimed & Renewable
Highest sustainability rating
- Made entirely from natural materials that are reclaimed or renewably sourced
- Sourced from: Managed forestry / FSC certified solid wood, and reclaimed woods
- Designed for long life, repairability and restorability
- Primary materials are biodegradable at the end of life
“Crafted from nature, returned to nature.”
A – Engineered Sustainability: Recycled & Circular
- Made primarily from recycled or recyclable engineered materials
- Main components are recyclable at end of life
- Includes recycled or recyclable materials: Metals (e.g., Aluminium), plastics and recovered textiles
- Circular design principles: Modularity, repairability, replaceable parts
- Designed for performance, long life and circularity
“Materials reborn with purpose.”
B – Low Impact Material Blend
- Primarily renewable or reclaimed natural materials or low impact engineered materials
- Engineered components are based on partial recycled content or are recyclable
- Limited combined use with high-performance standard materials
- Prioritises functionality, durability and longevity
- Standard material use restricted to where viable sustainable alternatives are not yet available
“Thoughtfully balanced for performance and planet.”
C – Standard Material Under Sustainable Development
- Uses mostly standard industrial materials (e.g., foam, plastics, synthetic fabrics)
- Sustainability comes from offsetting, efficiency, or partial recycled content
- Product may be durable and long lasting but not inherently eco friendly
- Actively working with suppliers to develop sustainable alternatives
“Improved impact, not yet optimal.”
D – High Impact Conventional Materials
Lowest sustainability rating
- Made from non-renewable & non-recyclable materials
- Heavy use of virgin plastics, petrochemical materials, or uncertified timber
- Limited transparency in sourcing
- Shorter lifespan or difficult to repair
“Conventional materials with high impact” – Not sold by Sustainable Furniture
We also actively participate the FLEGT Licenced Timber Initiative. FLEGT stands for “Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade”. This initiative aims to reduce illegal logging by strengthening sustainable and legal forest management, improving governance and promoting trade in legally produced timber. All new timber that we import from Indonesia comes with FLEGT certification, which guarantees that the timber is from sustainably sourced plantations, is harvested legally and ethically.
Why buy sustainable furniture? Quite simply the more furniture we produce from re-afforested sustainable sources, the more trees will be planted to meet the demand and the more CO2 will be an absorbed – a simple green solution to reducing your carbon footprint. Our sustainable product ranges include Douglas Fir, locally grown for us in Cornwall and expertly machined at our sawmill in The Duchy. Douglas Fir is perfect for outdoor use and produces high-quality, long-lasting and heavy-duty products that any commercial establishment would be proud of.
Each piece of our Teak Root Furniture is seriously impressive and 100% unique. Every root is excavated from abandoned Teak tree plantations and is carefully crafted to produce stunning table bases and works of art. Using the roots in this way creates valuable livelihoods for local communities in Indonesia and allows the soil to be used for further plantation. We love this sustainable process because it makes use of otherwise discarded by-products and they look incredible too. Our other furniture ranges manufactured from reclaimed Elm, natural Kubu Wicker, Swedish Redwood, Oak, and reclaimed Pine, along with our FLEGT certified solid Teak indoor and outdoor furniture complete our catalogue.
We are also able to offer a bespoke design service, enabling you to purchase stylish and traditionally built pieces with your own functionality in mind. All our products are made to the highest standard using traditional joinery methods and are designed to stand the test of time.
Our concept for sustainability is not just based on sourcing ethically, but is also about ensuring the longevity in furniture and timber. When using sustainably grown timber, the product’s lifespan should be equal to (or longer) than it takes for the tree to reach a harvestable size again. We take great pride in achieving the product for today with no compromise for the future. We work closely with our suppliers to develop new product ideas, influenced by the beauty and rich diversity of natural and sustainable resources. Where possible we use reclamation of timber, this is an especially effective method of sustainability that allows us to recycle previously used wood into beautiful new furniture.
