Teak is well known worldwide for being the perfect material for outdoor applications, especially garden furniture. Its tropical hardwood properties are extremely strong, durable and what is most important of all, it is naturally resistant to outdoor elements including rain, UV light, rapid temperature changes, wood eating insects, etc. Even when left outdoors all year round without any protection whatsoever, teak garden furniture remains unaffected when it comes to both beauty and durability. If left untreated the wood naturally fades to a silvery grey colour which looks both rustic and natural. However all our outdoor teak products can be treated with a teak garden furniture sealer to maintain the matte tanned look of the wood when you receive it as new.
Within our range we offer a variety of Teak garden furniture and products. We stock two grades of teak both Grade A and C. Many people ask what's the difference between the two except the price? Well here's some justification as to why they are different and why we offer both options Grade A teak is the highest quality teak wood. It refers to timber that is taken from the very centre of the log (heartwood) of a fully mature tree. Grade A teak can be recognised by a uniform, golden brown colour, close grains and glossy surface that feels oily to touch. It is high in teak natural oils which play the key role in teak outstanding resistance to outdoor elements by protecting it from unfavourable weather elements and repelling insects. Unfortunately, it makes up only about a fifth to one-quarter of the log and as a result, it has a high price. Grade C teak is the younger part of the tree and it refers to timber from the outer sections of a mature log (sapwood). As the timber has not had as long to mature as Grade A it naturally does not produce as many oils and therefore can weather to a silver-grey quicker, however again this does not impact the durability of the wood. As it is the younger part of the tree, this does mean that it won't be as hard as grade A and therefore may not stand the test of time as well as Grade A, but here at sustainable Furniture we guarantee our Grade C for 5 years. As Grade A timber is highly sought after most grade C timber often gets discarded for waste so we feel providing Grade C as an option not only helps the environment it uses the whole of the tree so nothing goes to waste - and remember all wood from a teak tree is classed as hard wood and any grade of teak is still an excellent option for outdoor use!All of the teak timber we use is native to the Far East and in particular Indonesia. The Indonesian Government have set up strict guidelines on illegal logging and all of our timber we use for our furniture comes from Government managed forests to ensure minmal effect to the environment but maximum growth for communities within Indonesia.
